HOW WE BEGAN
Although Redeeming Africa’s Hope was legally founded as a non-profit organization in 2008, our story began decades before. As a child, founder Laura Mitchell Kirangi was completely captivated by every documentary, book and magazine she could get her hands on that was about the continent of Africa. Every story, vibrant color, unique tribe and language made her heart come alive. She found herself deeply drawn to the hope of someday serving in Africa.
In 1996, just after Laura’s fifteenth birthday, her dreams came true, spending a summer serving in Malawi and Zimbabwe with Teen Missions International. Her weekdays were filled with constructing a feeding center in Chipoka, Malawi. On the weekends, her team spent joy-filled days playing with children in the community. That summer of service ignited a deeper passion in her heart to explore more of Africa. In 1998, she spent her summer in Mozambique and South Africa helping to construct a security wall for a hospital, laying the foundation for a missionary doctor’s home, and daily loving on the locals and spreading the gospel. After spending significant time in four African nations, the region of East Africa felt like home to her.
Back in the United States, the next decade of life was marked with finishing high school, missions training, work, relationships and dreaming of children's homes being established for orphans to be adopted into families. In 2008, God opened the door for Laura to go to Kenya, the country that had initially captivated her heart as a child. The first morning in Kenya, while walking through Kawangware slum in Nairobi, Laura saw a different vision than she had carried in her heart regarding children's homes. She heard a clear voice speaking to her heart saying, “I want to heal the land, and I want to heal the hearts of Africa, and I want to heal the hearts through healing the land.” Seeing the great physical, emotional and environmental needs of the people, she began to dream in a fresh way with God about what part she could play in healing the hearts and land. Over the next several months, the foundations were laid for Redeeming Africa's Hope to be established in Kenya.
