OUR VISION
To see communities throughout Kenya physically and spiritually redeemed—where land is renewed, hearts are restored, and people are empowered to flourish for generations.
Our Story
Although Redeeming Africa’s Hope was legally established as a nonprofit organization in 2008, our story began long before then.
As a young girl, founder Laura Mitchell Kirangi was captivated by Africa. She eagerly devoured every documentary, book, and magazine she could find about the continent. The vibrant cultures, diverse languages, breathtaking landscapes, and stories of its people stirred something deep within her heart. Even as a child, she sensed a calling and dreamed of one day serving in Africa.
That dream became a reality in 1996, shortly after Laura’s fifteenth birthday, when she spent a summer serving in Malawi and Zimbabwe with Teen Missions International. During the week, she helped construct a feeding center in Chipoka, Malawi. On weekends, she spent countless joy-filled hours playing with children, building relationships, and sharing the love of Christ within local communities. That summer ignited a passion that would continue to shape the course of her life.
Two years later, Laura returned to Africa, serving in Mozambique and South Africa. There, she helped construct a security wall for a hospital, laid the foundation for a missionary doctor’s home, and continued sharing the Gospel while serving alongside local communities. Through these experiences, her love for Africa deepened, and East Africa began to feel like home.
Over the next decade, life unfolded with missions training, work, relationships, and ministry opportunities. Throughout those years, Laura carried a dream of establishing children’s homes where orphaned children could be cared for and ultimately adopted into loving families. Yet God was preparing to reveal a vision far greater than she had imagined.
In 2008, God opened the door for Laura to travel to Kenya—the nation that had first captured her heart years earlier. On her very first morning in Nairobi, while walking through Kawangware Slum, everything changed.
Surrounded by overwhelming physical, emotional, and environmental need, Laura sensed God speaking clearly to her heart:
“I want to heal the land, and I want to heal the hearts of Africa, and I want to heal the hearts through healing the land.”
In that moment, her perspective shifted. Rather than focusing solely on caring for children, she began to see the interconnected challenges facing entire communities. Poverty, hunger, environmental degradation, lack of sanitation, and spiritual brokenness were deeply intertwined. God was inviting her into a vision of restoration that would address both the physical and spiritual needs of the people He loved.
Over the following months, the foundations for Redeeming Africa’s Hope were laid in Kenya. What began as a personal calling evolved into a ministry dedicated to walking alongside communities, empowering local leaders, and cultivating sustainable solutions that restore dignity, strengthen families, and create lasting change.
Today, Redeeming Africa’s Hope continues to pursue that vision through community development, feeding programs, discipleship, mentorship, and sustainable initiatives that improve both environmental and human well-being. We believe true transformation happens when practical needs are met, hope is restored, and people are empowered to flourish in the purposes God has for them.
In 2011, Laura married her husband, Kerah, and together they began building a family while continuing to steward the vision God had entrusted to them. As the ministry grew, so did their conviction that lasting impact is best cultivated through presence, relationship, and long-term investment in the communities they serve.
Today, Laura and Kerah, along with their four children, have relocated to Kenya full-time to continue the work God began many years ago. Their desire is not simply to serve communities, but to live among them—building relationships, empowering local leaders, and helping cultivate a culture of sustainability that restores the land, redeems hearts, and transforms communities for generations to come.
What began as a young girl’s passion for Africa has become a lifelong calling. Through every step of the journey, God has remained faithful, continually unfolding His vision of hope, restoration, and transformation.
And this is only the beginning.
